In einem fünftägigen Programm mit vier Workshopeinheiten werden unterschiedliche multimediale Techniken vermittelt, anhand derer sich die Workshopteilnehmer_innen (max. 12) mit einer gemeinsam gewählten Thematik aus dem Bereich Alltag auseinandersetzen. Ausgangspunkt für die Themenwahl ist die Beschäftigung mit den Berliner Tageszeitungen. Jede Workshopeinheit, die von einem eigenen Workshopteam betreut wird, hat ihr eigenes Format: Zeichnen/Projektion, Klang, Film/Animation & Choreographie. Ein Schwerpunkt liegt auf den performativen Aspekten dieser Methoden. Idealerweise nehmen die Teilnehmer_innen an allen vier Workshopeinheiten teil. Vorkenntnisse werden nicht vorausgesetzt.

Die gemeinsame Arbeit mündet in zwei Abschlusspräsentationen (Kotti-Shop, HAU 3) in Form eines Multiplen Environment, einer bewegten Klang- und Bildlandschaft, die live von den Workshopteilnehmer_innen gestaltet wird und interaktive Andockpunkte für die Besucher_innen bietet.

Drawings & Projections – Echo, Echo - with Quinten Dierick & Annette Knol

Things get repeated on a daily basis and on every level. Be it casual, accidental, habitual, ritualistic or maniacal: let’s make a break!

Our intension is to intervene with the daily grind through drawing games of echo and repetition, casual deformation and reinterpretation of prototypes. Armed with overheads, slide-projectors, carbon paper, stencils, paint, markers, collage-material and so on, we will revel ourselves in a copy-orgy and collaboratively create absurd duplications.

SOUND - Inventionen, Intensionen und Interventionen des Alltäglichen mit Anne Kohl & Laura Mello

Wie klingt der Alltag? Wie kann man durch Fantasie den alltäglichen Klang verwirren, und nach unserer Vorstellung neu gestalten? Wir werden mit Alltagsgegenständen, Haushaltsobjekten und Instrumenten experimentieren, sie klingen lassen, mit Effekten erweitern, bis wir letztendlich durch eine Strukturierung der Klangobjekte in der Zeit eine neue Alltagsordnung gründen.

Technische oder musikalische Vorkenntnisse sind nicht notwendig.

News flash - film is just projected shadows. In an attempt to represent reality and put the news on the screen in a really new way we introduce a technique for making 16mm film without film. We'll be photocopying newsprint onto gels and then splicing them onto sprockets for super saturated colour collage. When projected in an improvised multiple projector jam, these filmstrips will reach new levels of intensity - like exploding jewellery boxes in a sea of alphabet spaghetti.

Choreography with Amelia Bande & Francisca Villela

Simple dance steps and movement workshop based on newspaper phrases.

This is the last workshop and it adds the movement (alive human layer) to the landscapes constructed on the previous workshops.

We will first give the participants names of different dance steps or movement taken from newspaper headlines or news (like: “fighting gang culture with football” or “women claim record for invincibility”). This inverts the logic in which you first create a dance step and then you put a name to it. Participants will make their own interpretations of the titles and together we will create movements about what we think the titles speak about. The headlines become a series of dance steps, which add up into a simple choreography that will be performed within the created 3D landscape.

We will watch a youtube music video at the same time.
You connect via skype with me (laurablahblah), so you will be seen on the chat window. You can use your real name or a nickname, a funny one, anything.
While we are chatting we will listen to some songs, watching the youtube videos at the same time. Your role will be to "translate" the song. What I mean with the quotation marks is: if you don´t understand the meaning, you can "transform" it to your language through the sound, if there is a word / an expression in your language that sounds simmilar to the one you´re listening to. Or you can even do it in your own language, instead of using the right words, you can just "listen" to (=imagine) something else.

- 4 days Introduction to the multimodal Environment EyesWeb .
- 8 days individual/group workshop: participants or groups of participants worked on their projects with György´s assistance.
- 1 day presentation of results.

Motion capture, motion tracking and movement analysis. What is it?
An usb camera is connected to a computer with installed software EyesWeb and another Audiosoftware like e.g. Ableton Live, Reason or Reaktor.
In front of the camera there is a „main character“, someone or something that is moving whithin the picture in front of a background, i.e., there is some contrast between main character and background.
These movements are captured and analyzed by EyesWeb. The analysis is strongly based on Rudolf Laban´s Theory of Effort. Analysis results can be shared by Applications via XML, HTTP, RS232, TCP, UDP, OSC, DMX, MIDI

There are three main libraries for analysing movement:
1. Motion Analysis
2. Space Analysis
3. Trajectory Analysis

For example, in this case, György´s body middle point movements are captured and mapped to a filter in Reaktor through MIDI.

The teacher György Pongracz has a lot of experience working with dancers. We wanted to try out other possibilities of EyesWeb. Using the same algorithms made for human beings we tried out with other moving beings, like for example this friendly camel catched up at a petting zoo in Berlin.

The camel didn´t take our invitation to come to Staalplaat, but he allowed us to use his image. So we filmed him at the petting zoo Hasenheide in Berlin and exported it as an AVI format, with resolution 352 x 288 pixels to be read by EyesWeb. It means the camera is not being used real time in this case, what actually doesn´t make much of a difference for EyesWeb, because the analysis feature is the one that uses the greatest amount of processing capacity. The cameras that work the best with EyesWeb are WebCameras, with small resolution and bad quality.

The sound is being generated by the movements of the camel, connected through MIDI to Ableton Live. His movements on the horizontal (x axis) determine the pitch of the synthesizer and the movements on the vertical axis, the speed of a sound file (with human voice). I´ve recorded some moments of the empty scenery, without the camel, so that this moving element could be identified by EyesWeb as the object to be tracked. When the cute small black goat enters the scene EyesWeb understands it as if both of the animals were only one, so that you get kind of random MIDI values.

Another interesting project was using EyesWeb tracking hand movements, together with a Wii-Mote controller as trigger for pre-produced loops. In fact, this environment is almost like an instrument: one hand is tracked by EyesWeb and the other hand controls the Wii-Mote.

EyesWeb open source modular environment
As the name already says, EyesWeb is made on blocks that you can interconnect to build your own patches. Each module can also be reprogrammed, as it is open source.
Reading the EyesWeb Reference Manual we find the expressions „multimodal“ and „cross-modal“. It refers to the way EyesWeb is dealing with different datatypes. One feature is the ability to transform automatically datatypes of different, but compatible domains. They give as an example an FFT block that can work both on matrices and on audio streaming.
Another feature is the timestamping of datatypes. Each datatype is associated with a set of timestamp which let the kernel to synchronize them according to different needs.

But what is actually a “Block”?
From the user´s point of view, the Blocks are the most important objects in EyesWeb. Blocks represent an operation, from very simple to very complex, that can be performed on data. It means, blocks do something to a file, manipulate it in some way.

Die Reihe „Intermediales Komponieren mit Hilfe von OpenSource Entwicklungsumgebungen“ ist Teil einer gleichnamigen Promotionsforschung von Laura Mello am Institut für Audiokommunikation an der Technischen Universität Berlin, betreut von Stefan Weinzierl und Helga de la Motte-Haber.
Geplant sind Vorträge, Workshops und Konzerte von Künstlern und Künstlergruppen, in deren performativen Arbeiten die Anwendung von den Softwares EyesWeb und VVVV einbezogen wird.
Zielgruppe sind in eine Zusammenarbeit interessierte Künstler (aller Sparten) und Programmierer.

The series “Intermedia Composing with help of OpenSource Developing Platforms” is part of Laura Mello´s PhD research at the Institute für Audiokommunikation in the Technische Universität Berlin, tutored by Stefan Weinzierl and Helga de la Motte-Haber. The project comprises lectures, workshops and concerts taken by artists and groups of artists whose performative work includes the use of the softwares EyesWeb and VVVV.
The projects aim to reach artists and programmers who are interested in such a cooperation.

Eine Werkstatt der Begegnung und Experimentierung

Welche Möglichkeiten für ein sogenanntes „intermediales Komponieren“ bieten die Softwares EyesWeb und VVVV ?
Das Ziel dieses Workshops ist es, dass sich kleine Arbeitsgruppen bilden (2-3 Leute ca.), die ein Stück entwickeln sollen, wo Audio, Video und Performance durch die Softwares EyesWeb oder VVVV, oder beides zusammen, integriert werden.
In jeder Gruppe sollen ein Programmierer und 1 oder 2 andere Künstler dabei sein.
Der Arbeitsprozess wird von den Veranstaltern dokumentiert.

Möglichkeiten, mit der Arbeit in die Öffentlichkeit zu treten
Werden die Ergebnisse präsentiert werden können?
- Während des Workshops besteht für Teilnehmer auch die Möglichkeit, Konzerte im Staalplaat zu gestalten.
- Es besteht die Möglichkeit einer Präsentation (Vortrag) des Arbeitsprozesses (auch kleine Vorstellung), beim HörenSehen2 Festival in der Berlinischen Galerie, im November.

;">Was kann man mit EyesWeb und VVVV machen?

EyesWeb: Bei der EyesWeb-Plattform handelt es sich um eine Open-Source-Software für die verschiedenen Windows-Versionen die am Laboratorio di Infomatica Musicale der Universität von Genua entwickelt wurde. Das System wurde in der wissenschaftlichen Forschung entwickelt, dabei ging es um die Verknüpfung von ausdrucksstarken Gesten mit multimedialer „Reaktion“ der Umgebung.
Externe Anbindung durch MIDI-, Netzwerk-,DMX- und wdm-Schnittstelle, Anschluss an jede beliebige Script-Sprache (Visual Basic, Phyton, JavaScript?, etc.), sowie zu Steinberg VST, ASIO, OSC und den Freeframe Plug-Ins.

-VVVV: Entwicklung und Steuerung von Multimediainstallationen: Generierung und Analyse von Audio- und Videosignalen, Verarbeitung diverser Input- und Sensorsignale, Steuerung externer Systeme durch offene Standards (XML, HTTP, RS232, TCP, UDP, OSC, DMX, MIDI)
Entwicklung diverser VJ(Visual Jockey)-Anwendungen: Synchronisation von Audio-/Videoanwendungen und Nutzung diverser externer Steuerelemente wie z.B. Midi-Controller

Hörensehen 2.0
Das vom Hauptstadt Kulturfonds gefördertes Projekt „Hörensehen 2.0“ will den Versuch unternehmen, die Schnittstellen zwischen Musik und Video/Projektionskunst unter der thematischen Trias „Theatralität, Installation, Narrativität“ neu aus-zuloten. Dazu sollen insgesamt sechs audiovisuelle Werke an sechs internationale Teams aus Komponisten und Videokünstlern/Film-schaffenden in Auftrag gegeben werden und an drei Tagen im November 2009 im Rahmen eines kompakten Festivals in der Berlinischen Galerie präsentiert werden.

Zum Plan
Der Workshop besteht aus 2 Teilen:
1. ) Tag 1 bis 3 / 16.07.09 – 18.07.09 / 12 – 17 Uhr

Einführung in die Softwares EyesWeb und VVV und Möglichkeiten für Schnittstellen zwischen den beiden.
2. ) Tag 4 bis 10 / 19.07.09 – 26.07.09 / 12 – 17 Uhr
Der Raum, die Technik - Beamer und PA - und der Workshopleiter stehen zur Verfügung, die Gruppen teilen sich einzeln ein und arbeiten in der Entwicklung ihrer Stücken.

Maximale Teilnehmerzahl:

Programmierer sollen bitte Laptops (nur Windows) mit den installierten neuesten versionen von EyesWeb und VVVV mitbringen.

Workshop to get together, get to know eachother, and to try new things
Which possibilities do the softwares EyesWeb and VVVV offer for Intermedia Composing?
The aim of this workshop is to encourage people to form in small groups (2 to 3 people). These groups will then develop a piece integrating audio, video and performance using one or both software applications EyesWeb and VVVV.
Each group should be formed by a programmer and 1 or 2 other artists. The process will be documented by the organizers.

What can I do with EyesWeb and VVVV?
-EyesWeb: the EyesWeb Platform is an Open-Source-Software for the different Windows-Versions, developed at Laboratorio di Infomatica Musicale in the University of Genova. The system was developed in the context of scientific research, which aimed at combining emotional gesture with multimedia reaction of the environment.
External connection through MIDI-, Network-, DMX- and wdm-Interfaces, supports any Script-Language (Visual Basic, Phyton, JavaScript, etc.), as well as to Steinberg VST, ASIO, OSC and Freeframe Plug-Ins.
-VVVV: Used for developing and controlling multimedia installations, the generation and analysis of audio and video signals, processing diverse input and sensor signals, and controlling external systems through open standards (XML, HTTP, RS232, TCP, UDP, OSC, DMX, MIDI).
Development of diverse VJ(Visual Jockey)-Applications: Synchronisation of audio/video applications and using diverse external controlling devices like Midi-Controllers.

Hörensehen 2.0
Hörensehen 2.0 is a festival sponsored by the Berlin Capital Cultural Fond. The main aim ist to explore the boundaries between music and videoart under three curatorial aspects: “theatrality”, “installation”, “narrativity”. Six audiovisual works by six international teams will be presented during a three-day festival at the Berlinische Galerie in November 2009.

György Pongracz wurde in Ungarn geboren. Er studierte an der TU Budapest Computer Technology, lebt und arbeitet seit 1989 in München. Neben seiner Haupttätigkeit als Entwicklungsingenieur arbeitet er gemeinsam mit anderen Künstlern in verschiedenen Projekten. Er experimentiert mit künstlerischen Anwendungen neuer Hardware und Software für Theater, Tanz, Musik und Performance. In neuen Projekten ging es um die Modellierung und Kommunikation von expressiven und emotionalen Inhalten in eine nonverbale Interaktion über multisensorische Interfaces.

In einem interdisziplinären Workshop werden wir spielerisch einen Text aus dem Portugiesischen über das Englisch (wenn notwendig) ins Deutsche übersetzen.
Derselbe Text wird als Performance „Ao redor da mesa“ (Um den Tisch) aufgeführt.
Für alle die an brasilianisches Portugiesisch Interesse und auf Schauspiel Lust haben. Falls du nur beim übersetzen mitmachen willst, bist du natürlich genauso willkommen.

Um den Tisch
Um den Tisch sitzten 6 Leute, symetrisch verteilt, so dass jeder 2 Gesprächspartner hat, jeweils rechts und links. Mit jedem redet man über ein Thema: Fußball, Kochen, Politik, Dating, Beerdigung oder Weltnachrichten.

AO REDOR DA MESA - UM DEN TISCH - AROUND THE TABLE

The text of "ao redor da mesa" is built on six thematic dialogues about daily events (soccer, cooking, politics, dating, funerals, world news).
It can be played by anyone who likes it. The six players sit simetrically around a table and perform their dialogues. Each player performs two short dialogues of diferent content. One with the partner to his right and another with the partner to his left (d stands for direita - right and e for esquerda - left). There is about 30 seconds pause between each movement of the head. This time is not precise, because there isn´t any conductor, each player counts until 30 in his own notion of a second time. All the dialogues melt during the performance, which takes about 20 minutes, in varied poliphonical effects and sound textures. The scenic object, observed from a distance, resembles an oracle of birds, as the most recurrent movement is that of the heads of the players switching sides and speaking. The text of the dialogues is somewhat rebuilt in the memory of the audience, producing different encounters at each new performance
